Rwanda Partners with Aston Villa

More than a football sponsorship, Rwanda's new partnership with Aston Villa reflects a long-term vision to strengthen its global reputation.

More than a football sponsorship, Rwanda's new partnership with Aston Villa reflects a long-term vision to strengthen its global reputation.

Rwanda has opened a new chapter in its global nation branding strategy by partnering with Aston Villa Football Club.

Announced on 14 July 2026, the agreement makes Visit Rwanda Aston Villa’s official front-of-shirt partner, exclusive tourism partner and official coffee provider. The Visit Rwanda brand will appear on the shirts of the club’s men’s, women’s and youth teams across domestic and European competitions.

For Aston Villa, the agreement represents a major step in the club’s international commercial expansion. For Rwanda, it is much more than a football sponsorship. It is the latest move in a long-term soft power strategy designed to position the country as a destination for tourism, investment, business, international events and sport.

More Than a Logo on a Shirt

The front of a Premier League shirt is one of the most visible advertising spaces in international sport. Through televised matches, online highlights, social media, merchandise and global fan communities, Rwanda’s name will repeatedly reach audiences in the United Kingdom, Europe and far beyond.

The partnership also extends well beyond branding. It includes international marketing campaigns, matchday visibility at Villa Park, digital storytelling and fan experiences promoting Rwanda’s landscapes, hospitality, capital city and business environment.

Football development is another important part of the agreement. Aston Villa and Rwanda plan to work together on coach education, academy exchanges, scholarships, leadership programmes, charitable initiatives and professional development opportunities for Rwandans.

This broader structure reflects the evolution of sports sponsorship. Rwanda is not simply purchasing visibility. It is attempting to transform that visibility into tourism demand, business interest, skills development and stronger international relationships.

Building on the Arsenal Partnership

The Aston Villa agreement follows Rwanda’s landmark eight-season partnership with Arsenal, which concluded in June 2026.

Launched in 2018, the Arsenal agreement made Visit Rwanda the club’s first official sleeve partner. It placed the country’s tourism brand before one of football’s largest international fan bases and helped make Visit Rwanda one of the most recognisable destination campaigns in global sport.

The partnership included more than shirt visibility. Arsenal players and representatives travelled to Rwanda, while coaching initiatives supported the development of young footballers and local coaches. The collaboration also promoted Rwanda’s conservation efforts, national parks, Lake Kivu, cultural attractions and major events.

According to the Rwanda Development Board, visitor arrivals reached 1.3 million in 2024, while tourism revenues rose to approximately US$650 million—47% higher than when the partnership began. These results cannot be attributed to Arsenal alone. Rwanda also invested in hospitality, conservation, connectivity, events and destination development. Nevertheless, the partnership gave the country a level of sustained international exposure that conventional tourism advertising would have struggled to match.

The transition from Arsenal’s sleeve to Aston Villa’s front-of-shirt position therefore signals both continuity and evolution. Rwanda is maintaining its presence in English football while moving into an even more prominent sponsorship space.

Why Aston Villa?

Aston Villa offers Rwanda a different kind of opportunity.

The club combines deep history with renewed sporting ambition and a growing international profile. Its participation in major English and European competitions provides Visit Rwanda with year-round visibility across highly engaged audiences.

The partnership also creates a compelling narrative between Rwanda, widely known as the Land of a Thousand Hills, and Birmingham, historically described as the City of a Thousand Trades. Both parties have presented the relationship around shared ideas of enterprise, innovation and ambition.

By partnering with a club seeking to strengthen its global footprint, Rwanda can grow alongside the Aston Villa brand rather than simply attaching itself to an already saturated international platform.

From Birmingham to Los Angeles

The Aston Villa deal forms part of a much larger international sports strategy.

In September 2025, Visit Rwanda announced long-term agreements with two major Los Angeles franchises: the LA Clippers of the NBA and the Los Angeles Rams of the NFL. These partnerships run through 2030.

Visit Rwanda became the Clippers’ exclusive jersey-patch sponsor, official tourism sponsor and the coffee sponsor of Intuit Dome. Its branding appears on the team’s game and practice jerseys, both at home and away.

The Clippers partnership also includes basketball development initiatives. These include court refurbishment in Rwanda, coaching clinics, virtual training sessions and opportunities for Rwandan youth coaches to learn from the organisation’s development programmes.

The agreement with the Los Angeles Rams gives Visit Rwanda visibility across the NFL, SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park. The brand receives advertising exposure inside the stadium and sponsorship rights connected to specific hospitality and entertainment spaces.

Together, the Clippers and Rams deals made Visit Rwanda the first African tourism brand to establish sponsorships across both the NBA and NFL. They also extended Rwanda’s strategy into the United States, one of the world’s most valuable tourism, business and investment markets.

The geographical logic is clear. Aston Villa supports visibility in the United Kingdom and European football markets. The Los Angeles partnerships provide access to American audiences through basketball, American football and globally recognised entertainment venues.

Sport as a Soft Power Platform

Soft power is the ability of a country to shape international perceptions through attraction, culture, values and reputation rather than coercion.

Sport has become one of its most effective instruments.

A football match can reach audiences that may never engage with a diplomatic speech, tourism fair or investment conference. Supporters form emotional relationships with clubs, players and competitions. When a destination becomes consistently visible within that environment, it can begin to benefit from the same emotional attention.

For Rwanda, the phrase Visit Rwanda works as both a tourism invitation and a national branding statement. It encourages audiences to see the country not only as a place on a map, but as a destination connected to elite football, basketball, major events, conservation, hospitality and international ambition.

Repeated visibility creates familiarity. Familiarity can stimulate curiosity. Curiosity can eventually influence travel decisions, investment enquiries, business events and international partnerships.

This is why Rwanda’s strategy extends beyond tourism promotion. Its sports agreements support a wider narrative of a country open to visitors, investors, entrepreneurs and global institutions.

An Integrated Global Portfolio

Aston Villa and the Los Angeles partnerships sit alongside Visit Rwanda’s existing relationships with Paris Saint-Germain, Atlético de Madrid and the Basketball Africa League. The country has therefore developed a diversified portfolio across several sports, leagues and markets rather than relying on one club or one audience.

This consistency is one of the strategy’s greatest strengths.

Many countries launch short destination campaigns that disappear after a season. Rwanda has invested in sustained visibility over several years. Its identity is repeatedly presented through some of the world’s most influential sporting platforms.

The strategy also aligns with measurable economic objectives. Rwanda recorded 1.49 million visitors and US$685 million in tourism and conference revenues in 2025. By 2029, the country aims to increase annual tourism revenues to US$1.1 billion.

A New Phase of Rwanda’s Global Strategy

Rwanda’s partnership with Aston Villa is not an isolated sponsorship. It represents the next stage of a carefully constructed international strategy.

Arsenal helped introduce Visit Rwanda to global football audiences. Aston Villa gives the brand a more prominent front-of-shirt position. The Clippers and Rams expand the strategy into Los Angeles and the wider American sports market.

Together, these partnerships show how a relatively small country can use sport to compete for global attention.

Rwanda is turning football shirts, basketball jerseys and international stadiums into platforms for tourism promotion, economic diplomacy and national influence.

The message is simple, consistent and increasingly difficult to ignore:

Visit Rwanda.
